Oregon Trail
Converse County · Wyoming
Erected by State of Wyoming, 1913
The man who led the commission behind this stone had come west on the same road. Herman G. Nickerson, a Union captain who spent three months in Libby Prison, crossed to the Montana gold country by ox wagon on the Oregon Trail in 1866, mined at South Pass, and held Fremont County offices for decades, from the territorial legislature to Indian agent at Lander. In 1913, past seventy, he became the first president of the Wyoming Oregon Trail Commission and traveled the trail marking its route and forts, serving until 1921.
