Oregon Trail
Converse County · Wyoming
Erected by State of Wyoming, 1913
The creek the trail crossed near here took several names before one held. Emigrants of 1846 called it Beaver Creek; by the gold rush most who named it at all wrote La Prele, from the French for horsetail, the jointed plant that still grows along its banks, and spelled it every way they could. Locals add a syllable and say La Parelle. Edwin Bryant camped among box elder and willow in July 1846 and praised the grass. By July 1848 Hosea Stout found some grass, but nowhere near enough for the cattle crowding it.
