Historical Marker
John Hunton
Converse County · Wyoming
The stone's best monument is the one it does not mention. Hunton kept a diary from 1873 until the year he died, fifty-three volumes in all, laconic daily notes kept through years of supplying Fort Laramie and Fort Fetterman with wood, hay and beef and then running cattle. He left them to the Goshen County newspaperman L. G. Flannery, who set them aside for twenty-five years and began publishing them in 1956. Hunton, a Confederate veteran who reached Fort Laramie in 1867, had called the Pioneer Association's first meeting in September 1926.
