The Old South Bend Stage Station

Sweetwater County · Wyoming

The stone's name for the station is its second, and its date belongs to a dugout. A station called Ham's Fork stood near the junction of Ham's Fork and Black's Fork from about 1856 and served the Pony Express in 1860 and 1861. Only when the Overland stage swung onto the Bitter Creek route in 1862 did it become South Bend, for the sharp turn Black's Fork makes nearby toward the Green. Railroad crews of 1868 brought the name Granger. The site was deeded to the state in 1930, and this stone dedicated on May 27, 1931.
