Oregon Trail Memorial (Green River)

Sweetwater County · Wyoming
Erected by People of Green River, 1931

The crossing the stone points to is the ferry later called Lombard, some thirty miles up the river. Mountain men started it in 1843; Mormons bought it in 1850 and ran it as the Green River Mormon Ferry. In the busy months emigrants waited days and paid as much as sixteen dollars a wagon, and men swam their stock across to save the fee, some of them drowning. The town that put up this stone grew where the Overland stage road crossed the river after 1862, not where the emigrants had. William Lombard's name came only in 1889.
