Mother Magdalen and the Sisters of Loretto (1852-1968) / Carlsbad
Carlsbad, Eddy County · New Mexico
The panel's Carlsbad side tells how the town got its name, but it has crazed past reading. The town was laid out as Eddy on September 15, 1888, for Charles B. Eddy. Mineral springs near the flume were developed for their healing reputation, and in 1899 residents voted 83 to 43 to rename the town for Karlsbad, the Bohemian spa whose water theirs was said to match. Carlsbad Spring still flows near the flume. The panel's other face honors the Sisters of Loretto who reached Santa Fe in 1852.
