Civilian Conservation Corps Carlsbad Campsite
Carlsbad, Eddy County · New Mexico
This panel has moved and been corrected. Its first version stood on US-285 at North 8th Street, by the Carlsbad hospital that now covers the ground where the three CCC companies camped, and its title was printed with Carlsbad misspelled as Calrsbad. HMdb's contributors photographed it there in 2012. A replacement with the spelling fixed now stands in Heritage Park on West Pierce Street, beside one of the Carlsbad Irrigation Flume panels; its text is the same, set in new line breaks, and it still names President Park.
What the plaque says
Official Scenic Historic Marker Civilian Conservation Corps Carlsbad Campsite The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) provided employment for more than 50,000 young men in New Mexico during the Great Depression as part of President Roosevelt's New Deal Program. Three CCC companies were located where the Carlsbad Hospital now stands. They worked on flood control and reclamation projects along the Pecos River and in the Guadalupe Mountains and helped build Carlsbad's "President Park".
