Battle of Marks' Mills
New Edinburg, Cleveland County · Arkansas
Erected 2014
About 300 Black civilians traveled with the Union column to Marks' Mills. The Encyclopedia of Arkansas says Confederates were accused of massacring African Americans at the battle: about 150 freedmen were captured, and more than 100 others are believed to have been killed. The Cleveland County entry says the captured freedmen numbered more than 150 and that many were killed. These killings, with those of Black soldiers at Poison Spring a week earlier, angered Union soldiers, and the Second Kansas Colored Infantry took revenge on surrendering Confederates at Jenkins' Ferry.
