Mahomet Cemetery

Bertram, Burnet County · Texas
Erected 1994

Burnet County's first congregations were as scattered as its graves. One of the earliest was a Christian church organized at Sycamore Springs in 1851, the same year Mormons at Mormon Mill formed theirs. A Baptist church followed on Oatmeal Creek in 1854 and a Church of Christ at Burnet in 1856. Few communities had their own preacher, so people traveled for miles to camp meetings, the first of them held by Methodists at Sand Springs in the fall of 1855. The first deed for church land in the county was made in Backbone Valley in 1859.

What the plaque says

W. and Nellie Greer deeded the cemetery property to the community of Mahomet. Among the hundreds of people buried here are many of the area's pioneer settlers and their descendants and veterans of wars ranging from the Mexican War (1846-1848) to the Vietnam War.
