Lyons Station Stagecoach Stop
Newhall, Los Angeles County · California
Erected by Calif. State Parks Comm., Eternal Valley Memorial Park, and Native Sons & Daughters of the Golden West, 1959
This was a whole settlement, not just a stop. Store, post office, telegraph, tavern and stage depot stood here through the Kern River gold rush of the early 1850s, and Butterfield coaches pulled in on the run north. Sanford and Cyrus Lyons bought the place in 1855, and by 1868 twenty families lived around it. The ground is a memorial park now, and the people who ran the station are buried in the corner of it called the Garden of the Pioneers.
What the plaque says

A regular stop for Butterfield and other early California stage lines, it was purchased by Sanford and Cyrus Lyons in 1855, and by 1868 at least twenty families lived here.
