Logan to Brigham Pioneer Pony Express Mail Trail
Mantua, Box Elder County · Utah
Erected, 2006
The famous Pony Express never came near Mantua — this trail earned the name locally, and honestly. Samuel Alonzo Whitney Sr., a young rider with one arm, carried the first mail between Logan and Brigham City, crossing twice a week on routes that included an old Native trail over the divide into this valley. The missing arm became his safe-conduct: in years of conflict, Shoshone people recognized him far off, called him Burrowit, one arm gone, and often rode along beside him. Whatever the times did, Whitney's mail went through.
