Llano Woman's Culture Club
Llano, Llano County · Texas
Erected 1997
The year Jennie Clopton gathered her society, the state federation of women's clubs was growing fast. By 1901 it counted 132 member clubs, which it organized that year into five districts across Texas. Before its twentieth anniversary it had added standing committees on education, civic improvement, parks and playgrounds, conservation, rural life, public health and more. The federation began its scholarship program in 1903, the legislature granted its first charter in 1914, and in 1932 the cornerstone was laid for its permanent headquarters in Austin, a $157,000 brick building.
What the plaque says
Llano Woman's Culture Club Local music teacher Jennie Clopton (1861-1904) organized the Woman's Literary Society with 16 charter members in 1901. The club established a public library, first called Clopton Library for the club's founder. Other projects of the renamed Woman's Culture Club included landscaping in public areas and scholarships. Club members coordinated a Works Progress Administration project to build a public library building here in 1938-39. Meetings were held at the library until 1953 when George Watkins bequeathed his home to the club. (1997)
