Kootenai Tribe of Idaho
Boundary County · Idaho
The war was declared by a woman. Amy Trice, the tribe's chairwoman, gave President Ford until midnight on September 20, 1974, to send an emissary to open treaty talks; when none came, tribal members stood at both ends of Bonners Ferry on US-95 asking a ten-cent toll to cross their country, and sold war bonds to pay for the war. State police came armed. Within weeks Trice led a delegation to Washington, and Ford signed legislation placing the tribe's 12.5-acre mission grounds in trust, its first reservation. The tribe now holds about 2,500 acres.
