David Thompson (1770-1857)
Boundary County · Idaho
He found the river in spring flood, three hundred yards wide and very deep, and called it McGillivray's River. Thompson came back on August 29, 1809, and spent a week trading with the Kootenai at the same camp; on October 28 he set up a small North West Company post where Deep Creek meets the Kootenai. His wife, Charlotte Small, daughter of a Scottish trader and a Cree mother, traveled these mountains with him and their children, and between 1808 and 1812 the family crossed back and forth between present-day British Columbia, Montana and Idaho.
