Bonners Ferry
Boundary County · Idaho
Edwin Bonner held the ferry, but other men ran it. He took out the franchise from the Idaho legislature on December 22, 1864, with partners, to serve the rush to Wild Horse in British Columbia, where thousands of miners had to cross the Kootenai here, and a succession of ferrymen operated it, among them Richard Fry, a Wild Horse miner. The crossing became a public ferry run by the county in 1902. A log outpost from the ferry years is the town's oldest building. The valley was later drained and diked into farms nicknamed the Nile of the North.
