Japanese Attack on Oregon
Curry County · Oregon
The board ends with the fires put out; the rest belongs to the pilot. Nobuo Fujita came back to Brookings in 1962 and again in 1990, 1992 and 1995, and in 1985 he invited three Brookings students to Japan. On the 1992 visit he planted a coast redwood at the bomb site on Wheeler Ridge, an apology to the forest. The town made him an honorary citizen in his last days, and he died of lung cancer on September 30, 1997, at 85. In October 1998 his daughter, Yoriko Asakura, buried some of his ashes at the site.
