Indian Battlefield
Perry, Falls County · Texas
Erected 1936
Three sources tell this fight three ways. The marker says colonists lost a battle on January 16, 1839, to Indians under Chief Jose Maria. The Handbook of Texas entry on Falls County says Bucksnort men attacked a Native party six days after it was repulsed at Fort Marlin; each side lost ten, the Native force won, and no chief is named. Its entry on José María, an Anadarko leader, records only one fight with settlers, in 1841. Frontier Times has settlers under Benjamin Bryant meeting Jose Maria at Morgan's Point. The Handbook dates peace to 1845.
