Home of Adolphus Sterne
Nacogdoches, Nacogdoches County · Texas
Erected 1936
Sam Houston lived at the Sterne house. The Handbook of Texas says he boarded with the Sternes when he first arrived and was baptized a Catholic in their parlor, as Mexican law prescribed. Eva Sterne was Houston's godmother; Adolphus did not serve as godfather because the date fell on Yom Kippur. Sterne's father was an Orthodox Jew and his mother Lutheran, and he was born most likely in Cologne. He kept a diary from September 1840 to November 1851, published in 1969 as Hurrah for Texas.
