Gutiérrez Adobe

Nothing cast marks this house; a painted city sign on a post says only that it was built in the Mexican period. Joaquín Gutiérrez, a cavalry soldier, got the town lot in 1841, and he and his wife Josefa, of the Escobar family, raised fifteen children in a plain adobe of the kind that once lined these streets. A wing has since been torn down. After his death in 1872 the heirs divided the property. The Monterey Foundation later saved the house from a sale for back taxes, and it passed to the state.
