House of Four Winds

Nothing cast marks the house: a painted history-association board stands out front, and a club sign on the wall points to the side entrance. The Monterey Civic Club, which met for the first time in 1906 with thirty-four women present and was among the first groups to push for saving the town's adobes, bought the house in 1914 and made it their clubhouse. The name comes from its weather vane, said to be Monterey's first. The register's claim that it served as an early hall of records rests, by its own account, on tradition.
