George W. P. Hunt

Phoenix, Maricopa County County · Arizona

Beneath the white pyramid on the Papago Park hill lies George W. P. Hunt, Arizona's first governor and its most stubborn. He presided over the 1910 convention that wrote the state constitution, then won the governorship seven times, a national record he set across nonconsecutive terms. A populist who championed labor, prison reform, and the common man, and a rotund figure impossible to miss, Hunt asked to be entombed where he could overlook the valley. His wife Duette and her family lie with him. The pyramid tomb remains one of the odder landmarks on the Phoenix skyline.
