General M. G. Vallejo Home

Vallejo kept the spring's Native name and put it into Latin: Chiucuyem, crying mountain, became Lachryma Montis. The house he raised beside it in 1852 was prefabricated back east and shipped around Cape Horn, his Yankee house after the adobe on the plaza. The spring fed a reservoir that watered the town for decades while Vallejo lost nearly all his land in court, and he died here in 1890 on what was left. The state bought it in 1933. His daughter Luisa, born here, became its first curator, and a plaque by the steps says so.
