Fuchs Cemetery

Horseshoe Bay, Burnet County · Texas
Erected 1995

Adolf Fuchs left a pulpit in Mecklenburg for Texas. Educated at Jena, Halle and Gottingen, he was pastor at Kolzow from 1835 until he emigrated. For his departure the poet Hoffmann von Fallersleben wrote "Der Stern von Texas," and his Texanische Lieder, partly inspired by Fuchs, bore a false imprint naming "San Felipe de Austin bei Adolf Fuchs & Co." Finding himself unready for pioneer farming, Fuchs taught music at Baylor Female College. On the Burnet County place he set German poems to music around one of the first pianos west of the Colorado.

What the plaque says

Fuchs Cemetery Land here granted by the Republic of Texas to Ferdinand Lueders, Battle of San Jacinto veteran, was transferred in 1844 to the Rev. Adolph Fuchs (1805-1885) of Germany. Fuchs, a noted musician and composer, immigrated to Texas with his wife Louise and 7 children on January 10, 1845, and settled here in 1853. The first recorded burial was that of Ino Fuchs Varnhagen in 1869. The expanded Fuchs family played prominent roles in the early development of many area communities. The land remained in the family until 1963. Adolph and Louise Fuchs and many of their descendants are buried here. (1995)
