Frémont's Camp
Tulelake, Modoc County · California
Frémont's party camped at the southeast corner of Tule Lake from May 1 to 4, 1846, and he gave the water a new name: Rhett Lake, for Barnwell Rhett of South Carolina, later one of secession's loudest voices. The Modoc, whose lake it was, had names of their own, and the federal gazetteer still carries them among its variants. Neither kind of name kept the lake. After 1905 the Klamath Project drained Tule Lake to a sump a quarter its old size, and the shore the party camped beside is farmland. Nothing marks the site.
