Battle of Land's Ranch-1872

The register tells this from the wagon road: soldiers lagging behind a supply train, attacked from the rocks above, two killed. It was the war's fourth week. On November 29, 1872, the Army had tried to force Kintpuash's Modoc band off Lost River and back to the Klamath reservation, and the band crossed Tule Lake into the lava beds. On December 21, the day Colonel Frank Wheaton took field command, a party from there struck the train here. Two printed state signs stand by Highway 139; nothing is cast.
