Bloody Point
Tulelake, Modoc County · California
This was the east shore of Tule Lake, Modoc country, where emigrant trains on the Applegate road were attacked in the summer of 1852. Volunteers from Yreka and Jacksonville buried at least thirty-six people. The tolls told afterwards ran far higher, and the register's, dating it 1850 with over ninety dead, is one of them. It leaves out that November, when Ben Wright's militia killed about forty Modoc at a peace parley on Lost River. Even the spot is doubted. Nothing cast marks it; a Trails West rail stands a mile and a half southeast.
