The bronze gives the fort one ending, June 1867, and the record gives three. Company E of the 2nd Infantry built it on Cow Creek in May 1852, a post that flooded in the rainy season; most of the troops left in April 1856, the buildings were used off and on after that, and the Army gave the site up entirely in April 1870. It was put here to guard the mines on Wintu and Yana ground, the same summer the Senate refused to ratify the treaty the Wintu had signed at Cottonwood.
