First Post Office in Roy

Roy, Weber County · Utah
Erected by NA, 1938

Roy began in the corner of a kitchen. The first post office sat in the Field family's two-room home, tucked into a corner of the kitchen, with Orson Field sworn in as the first postmaster in May 1894. The town needed a name to go with it, and the postal department chose from a short list — Central City, Lake View, Sand Ridge, Roy — preferring the last for its brevity. "Roy" honored a minister's son, David Peebles's boy, who had died at the age of two. The office soon moved to a building of its own.
