First City Market
Shreveport, Caddo County · Louisiana
Market Street was part of a town drawn before it was built. After the Shreve Town Company formed in May 1836, Louisville surveyor E. D. Hobbs drew a plan eight streets wide, from Cross Bayou to Silver Lake, and eight deep, from the Red River to the bottomland, on a ridge that stayed dry. The Texas Trail ran through it. The plaque's claim that electric streetcars started at this corner on October 4, 1890 sits beside a local television history that finds mule cars running for decades and some lines electrified by 1893.
