Cane & Bennett's Trading Post
Shreveport, Caddo County · Louisiana
Erected 1958
The names belong to a partnership that outlived both men. William Smith Bennett died in 1837 and James Huntington Cane in 1844, but their store on the bluffs by the Texas Trail was where the Shreve Town Company met on May 27, 1836 and where both men joined it. Mary Bennett Cane, wife of Bennett and then of Cane, inherited their shares, became the company's greatest beneficiary and bought land in Caddo and Bossier parishes. She died in 1902. Henry Shreve, whose name the town took, never lived there.
