Henry Watkins Allen / Battery 10
Shreveport, Caddo County · Louisiana
Allen governed a state that was mostly occupied. In office from January 1864, he ran Confederate Louisiana from Shreveport and tried to make it self-sufficient, with a trade route through Texas to Mexico, a unified currency, state stores selling supplies cheaply, a cotton-cloth factory and low-cost medicine factories at Shreveport and Minden. Shot in the face at Shiloh and badly hurt in both legs at Baton Rouge, he used crutches. After the war he fled to Mexico, edited the Mexico Times and died in Mexico City on April 22, 1866; he was reburied at Baton Rouge in 1885.
