Fillmore Veterans Memorial
Fillmore, Millard County · Utah
Fillmore was briefly the whole point of Utah — the territory's first capital, where the legislature met in 1855 and 1856 before decamping back to Salt Lake. What remains of that ambition is the squat sandstone Territorial Statehouse, the oldest government building in the state. This memorial stands near it, and there is a fitness to that: the town that once housed the territory's government keeping the roll of the men it sent to the World War and the wars after. A place that briefly held power now holds names.
