Evans and Bailey Fight-1861

The marble on the hilltop counts the cattle alongside the dead. Erected in 1929, it names S. D. Evans Sr. of Roseburg and Joe Bailey of Eugene, killed on this spot on August 1, 1861, and 800 head stolen. The state register makes it 900 head, driven from Roseburg with sixteen hands through Pit River country toward the Comstock mines at Virginia City. Neither names who fought them, or why. The obelisk stands some 700 feet from the road on private land; a granite stone by the road, an Eagle Scout project, points up the hill.
