Old Emigrant Trail

Wagon ruts, and trees eight to ten inches thick growing in them: that was the register's proof in 1933 that the road was still easy to trace. It was the Lassen route, carrying the 1849 rush down the Pit River toward the Sacramento Valley. Amos Batchelder came through on September 29 that year and wrote that his company had to cross the river again and again, the canyon walls pinning it to a narrow bed. His line is the one engraved on the Trails West rail that stands here, set in 1997.
