Chimney Rock

Erected by Alturas Parlor No. 159, Native Daughters of the Golden West, 1932
Only the chimney is left. Thomas Denson, a stonemason, set his cabin against this outcrop of soft volcanic tuff in the Pit River people's valley and carved the fireplace and flue into the rock itself. The gouged flue still shows beside the railroad track; nothing of the cabin does. The Native Daughters' bronze of 1932 names him Thomas A. Denson and dates the cabin 1871. The state register, a year later, calls him Thomas L. and says 1870, and puts the rock 77 miles north of Alturas. It stands less than eight.
