Corinne Opera House

Corinne, Box Elder County · Utah
Erected by DUP, 1956

For a raw railroad town, Corinne built itself a remarkable stage. Raised in 1879 of red pine and square nails, its opera house was for years the largest hall in Utah outside Salt Lake City. Stock companies riding the new railroad toward California broke their journey here and played to packed houses; the child actress Maude Adams, later Broadway's first Peter Pan, and even Barnum's Tom Thumb are said to have appeared on its boards. The building did double and triple duty — church, dance hall, movie house, and Utah's first non-sectarian school. It came down in 1952.

What the plaque says

On this site the Corinne Opera House, for many years the largest recreation center in Utah outside of Salt Lake City, was erected in 1879. Built of red pine lumber with square nails, the leading stock companies, California bound on the new railroad, stopped over and played to capacity houses. Among the players were Tom Thumb and Corinne Lavaunt. Maude Adams also played here. The building served as church, dance hall, public auditorium, first non-sectarian school in Utah, and picture shows. Was in constant use until 1952 when it was razed. Corinne Camp - Boxelder County
