Col. Steward Alexander Miller
Crockett, Houston County · Texas
Erected 1973
Steward Miller, orphaned young in Virginia, learned the tanning trade and taught school before he came to Texas in 1839, the Handbook of Texas says. He settled in Crockett and studied law with James Carr. He joined the 1843 Snively expedition and kept a day-by-day account of it; the title colonel he picked up there stayed with him for life. After going back to Virginia in 1850 he married Rebecca Whiten the next year, with whom he had ten children. He served in the state Senate in 1851, 1854 and 1861, and as county judge for two terms.
