Coeur d'Alene Lake
Kootenai County · Idaho
In law the lake's southern end belongs to the Schitsu'umsh. The tribe told Idaho in 1991 that it would sue for title; the United States brought the case on the tribe's behalf, and on June 18, 2001, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that the federal government holds the submerged lands under roughly the lower third of the lake, and part of the St. Joe River, in trust for the tribe. Idaho had conceded that the 1873 reservation took in the lakebed; the dissent argued that statehood in 1890 carried title to the state anyway.
