Clash at Whitten's Mill
Prattsville, Grant County · Arkansas
Erected 2015
The mill belonged to David Whitten, but Union reports called it Whitmore's, and the Encyclopedia of Arkansas indexes the fight under both names. On April 30, 1864, the morning of Jenkins' Ferry, a Union scouting party of about 150 men drove in the pickets of Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin Elliott's First Missouri Cavalry Battalion. Elliott sent two companies forward and scattered the scouts. Believing it faced all of Fagan's command, the Union force of about 2,000 withdrew and burned at least 200 of its own wagons. Neither side reported a casualty.
