Bonner Grade
Cedarville, Modoc County · California
John Bonner, the Cedarville merchant, pushed the first wagon road over the Warner Mountains in 1869, and it drew the traffic away from Fandango Pass to the north. The grade climbs west from Surprise Valley to Cedar Pass, and Highway 299 follows its line, six percent for five miles by the road signs. A stone pedestal stands at the pullout with its plaque gone; no photograph of the plaque has been found, so what it said is unknown. Bonner was one of the two partners who moved Townsend's cabin to found Cedarville.
