"Captain" John West and Westport, Oregon
Clatsop County · Oregon
John West came from Linlithgow in Scotland by way of Quebec and the California gold fields, and by 1851 was milling lumber here. He salted salmon into barrels for shipment around Cape Horn, helped found the first cannery on the Oregon side of the river in 1868, and built a machine to fill the cans. His British importers were the ones who kept his name. In 1888, the year he died, the Liverpool merchants Pelling and Stanley acquired the rights to it, and John West, the brand, is now owned by Thai Union.
