Blind Lemon Jefferson

Wortham, Freestone County · Texas
Erected 1967

The Handbook of Texas describes the music in some detail. Jefferson had a two-octave vocal range and played single-note runs, often picked with his thumb, in a variety of keys and tunings. His lyrics were ironic, humorous, sad and poignant, and he sometimes called out dance names between stanzas. He also recorded two spirituals, released under the name Deacon L. J. Bates. The 1920 census lists him in Freestone County as a musician whose employer was 'general public.' The entry names Lightnin' Hopkins, T-Bone Walker, Carl Perkins, Jefferson Airplane and the Beatles among those he influenced.
