Berkeley City Club
Berkeley, Alameda County · California
Erected by State Department of Parks and Recreation; Berkeley City Club, 1977
Berkeley women paid for all of it. Members of the city's civic and philanthropic groups founded the club in 1927, raised the money through a membership drive and two mortgage bonds secured by clubwomen, and hired Julia Morgan, California's first licensed woman architect. The six-story clubhouse and residence opened in 1930 with more than 4,000 members. For three decades it housed and served women only. Men were admitted in 1962, and it now takes hotel guests as well. Morgan's own plate, cast with her name and 1929, sits below the state bronze.
