Bell's Bridge

J. J. Bell's bridge of 1851 carried the road from Shasta City to Tehama over Clear Creek, and his house of 1859, Bell's Mansion, became a stop for miners headed to the Shasta, Trinity and Siskiyou diggings. What the landmark marks now is a busy intersection on old Highway 99. Its plaque is gone: by 2001 only the empty concrete block stood, and no photograph of the bronze before its loss has been found. Seven miles out Clear Creek Road is Reading's Bar, where the creek's gold was first found.
