Assumption Greek Orthodox Church
Price, Carbon County · Utah
Erected by NA
Coal and rail work drew a large Greek community to Carbon County in the early 1900s, and in 1916 they built this church for themselves — Assumption Greek Orthodox, dedicated that August in traditional Byzantine style, with a priest, Mark Petrakis, presiding. For immigrant miners far from home, in a county where they were often treated as outsiders, it was an anchor of language, faith, and belonging. The parish endures in Price, one of the lasting marks the Greeks of the coalfields left on a corner of Mormon Utah.
