Historical Marker
Abigail Scott Duniway
Yamhill County · Oregon
The opponent the board leaves out lived in her own family. Her younger brother, Harvey W. Scott, edited The Oregonian, the dominant paper in the state, and it opposed woman suffrage for as long as he ran it. Oregon voted the measure down in 1884, 1900, 1906, 1908 and 1910; in 1900 it lost by 2,137 votes, and Duniway blamed her brother's editorials. Scott died in 1910. On November 5, 1912, the measure passed by 4,161 votes, the paper backed it, and she wrote the proclamation the board quotes.
