18th St. Bridge
Nez Perce County · Idaho
The bridge opened on October 15, 1913, and by its last years drivers joked that each end ought to carry a sign congratulating them on making it across again. Its replacement, four lanes at the foot of 21st Street, cost about $1.5 million. Former Governor C. A. Robins dedicated it on April 28, 1951, but the approaches were unfinished, and traffic began only at 10 a.m. on May 22, when cars poured on from both ends at once and residents spent the day driving back and forth. That span, the Clearwater Memorial Bridge, still carries US-12.
What the plaque says
18th St. Bridge Lewiston's first bridge across the Clearwater River was constructed in 1913. It was replaced in 1951. Early efforts for a bridge were opposed by ferryboat owners, but other business leaders recognized the need for a link to northern communities. Spanning 780 feet, its steel girders and railings were painted green and red. The wooden deck was 19 feet wide to accommodate large wagons. Automobiles and heavy trucks soon challenged the design. 501 Text prepared by the Nez Perce County Historical Society and the Idaho State Historical Society. Marker made and installed by Idaho Transportation Dept.
