Wyoming Vietnam Veterans Memorial
Park County · Wyoming
Erected 1986
This black wall came first. In 1985 a Cody committee set out to build a smaller likeness of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, at a time when, one member recalled, people hardly spoke of the war, and it was dedicated on Veterans Day 1986 carrying the names of Wyoming's dead. Everything around it came later: the Korean War and World War II memorials, the Freedom Memorial, and the grounds' designation as the State of Wyoming Veterans Memorial Park. After thirty-five years the granite was failing, rebar showing through, and a Save the Wall campaign raised money for repairs.
