Wells Fargo Express Company Building

Chinese Camp, Tuolumne County · California

The only plaque this building ever carried was for somebody else. The Walkerly brothers put it up in 1849 in brick, with iron doors and iron shutters, the standard defence in a town made of wood and lit by candles, and it held a general store and the office of Adams Express, the company Wells Fargo succeeded. Solinsky Alley beside it takes the name of one of the express agents. The state never marked it. What hung on the front was a 1961 Clampers tablet honouring Eddie Webb, a stage driver, and that is recorded missing too.
