Douglas County · Oregon
The panel names gold, mercury and nickel among the region's minerals. The nickel came from Nickel Mountain, west of Riddle, where weathering of ancient seafloor rock in the Klamath Mountains left a crust rich in the metal. The M. A. Hanna Company began mining and smelting it in 1954, and Glenbrook Nickel ran it from 1987 to 1998, when low prices closed it for good. For most of those years it was the only nickel producer in the United States, employing about 650 people at its height.
